Research and the Scarlet Letter

I love research. I imagine that it has a little to do with my snoopy, Scorpion nature, but when it comes down to it... I just love to find new information. My juniors and seniors are struggling with research right now. Research runs colleges. It's trial and error. It's try and fail and try and fail and try and fail and when you are about ready to give up... try and fail and work towards success. One way does not usually accomplish the task and as most scientists will tell you... it needs to be replicated. That's usually the toughest part.
It also takes a lot of organization... one has to keep track of where one has been and where one has succeeded and that is usually the time-taking toil of research. I enjoy the organization now that I have a computer at my fingertips 24/7. I am debating allowing my students to not use notecards this year during their research project. However.... that so goes against the grain of even my thought, that I'm not sure I want to allow that. I may have to ask for their opinion. I've tried to keep it all organized electronically before and It wasn't as easy as I had anticipated. We'll see. Until then, students, keep at it and enjoy the search. I mean really, what else do you have to do during those minutes you are sitting and staring at the wall.
