National teacher of the year! It's all about the students. He reminded us all that for some of the students, school is not only a respite, but their family. We get so caught up in the test scores and grades and parents and all the peripheral material that gets in the way, that all too often we forget that we are there for the kids. How many times have we heard from someone that the reason they are in education is because they like that "Ah-ha" moment in a kid's eye. We need to remember that everyday, not just those days that it fits. Can you believe he was a New York City detective? Teaching was a second career for him. It's never too late for those who can teach to teach.
