Choices

Another week to start and an end to another. I finished a book by Nicholas Sparks Choices this morning. It was a quick read, but one that I've been putting off. Sparks writes novels that appeal a sense of romanticism, surprise, lust, and second chances. This particular novel has one of the main charactes choosing between a fiancee with whom she's grown bored and the lovely (her word) next door neighbor who likes to do everything without his shirt on. The reader knows immediately who she's going to choose, but alas, like all of Sparks' novels, a twist ensues at the end. And it's happy. Granted, I cried buckets of tears at the end of Message in a Bottle. This one disappointed me a little.
I like the idea of living with choices that one has to make. Ultimately, everything in life comes down to choices that we make. The trick is learning to live with them. That's the hard part. I'd love to be able to tell my students and kids that second chances exist and any choice made can be rectified, but that isn't always the case. This novel gave the impression that choices work out even if they are the wrong one. Maybe I'm a little pessimistic tonight. At least it sounds that way as I reread this.
