if you're not aware of who Charles Kuralt is, he's a reporter who spends a great deal of time traveling the country and introducing different locales to his readers and viewers. His anthology of hot spots across the country and narratives and connections to the locations brings out a sense of travel that doesn't exist in me naturally.
I always enjoy the journey once it starts. It's the starting that is my problem. I will fight and fidget and do everything in my power to avoid the starting. I'm also one who likes to return. Something about returning home after any kind of a journey is comforting.
My dad was a driver. We would get up early and drive----well it seems until we got there. No matter where the there was. We drove straight through to the Texas border once. Quite a feat until I repeated that trip straight through to San Antonio.
He talks about New Orleans. I loved Louisiana. I was 14 and everything intrigued me and amazed me. Everything was new and undiscovered to my naive eyes. I wonder if it's that naivete that has gone and now mars my traveling eyes.
